art bit #6: Game Playing Society to Close on July 12 with a Philosophy Café — “Can Play Change Society?” — Plus a Limited Exhibition Catalog Available on the Day.

art bit #6: Game Playing Society, currently on view at HOTEL ANTEROOM KYOTO, is scheduled to close on July 12. To mark the occasion, we will be hosting a closing event: a philosophy café titled “Can Play Change Society?”

The event will be facilitated by Kazunori Yamamoto, representative of Yohaku Seisakusho, an organization with a track record of hosting philosophy cafés. Rather than a lecture format, this is a participant-driven dialogue in which everyone explores the theme together.

From childhood, we learn rules through play — and sometimes rewrite those rules as we interact with others. Today, games and play have moved far beyond entertainment: they are generating new economies and communities, shaping people’s values and behavior in profound ways.

This exhibition focuses on the social power of play, presenting works that imagine a future in which games and play become woven into the fabric of society. The philosophy café will take that premise as its starting point and open up questions such as:

  • Is play a temporary escape from existing society — or an experiment that anticipates a new one?
  • Do we play by the rules, or are we played by them?
  • Can society itself be understood as a kind of game?

These questions will be explored through open dialogue among participants. No prior knowledge or expertise is required. Whether you’ve seen the exhibition or are simply curious about games, play, art, or society, everyone is welcome.

Starting with this event, a limited edition catalog looking back on the exhibition will also go on sale at HOTEL ANTEROOM KYOTO.one is welcome.
